Sweet Dreams: The Scoop
Here’s the scoop.
You may have noticed that a new project snuck onto the Mattoid website and thought to yourself;
“Self; what the heck is “Sweet Dreams”, where did it come from and how can it assist in my never-ending quest for immortality?”
Well, I can answer all of those questions for you.
So I will.
About a month ago I went home to Colorado (No, not Denver) to do some research for our upcoming film “Honor Farm” as well as celebrate my brothers 30th birthday (feel free to speculate wildly on which of the two took up more of the trip).
One night we were having dinner with my best friend Joie and she mentioned that Matthew (my brother) and I needed to stop by her brothers’ restaurant Crooks Palace before I left to experience the amazing culinary creations on the menu. She raved about all the delicacies on the menu and how everything was made from scratch. She then went on to describe the astonishing array of homemade ice cream they had begun creating in the Crooks Palace kitchen with flavors like sauerkraut, ghost pepper, sesame, popcorn and ginger. I thought that perhaps Joie had had one too many margaritas with dinner, but couldn’t wait to try the much raved about Crooks Palace for myself.
My brother and I decided we would stop by before I had to go to the airport as Crooks Palace is in Black Hawk (which is about an hour west of Denver).
When we arrived we were both very impressed by the building itself. Crooks Palace is a historic landmark and the oldest saloon in Colorado (it is said that Billy the Kid drank at it’s bar), and beautifully maintained in the small mountain valley in which Black Hawk rests. When we entered we were warmly greeted and taken to the dining room where Matt and Mike (the owners) then came out to chat with us before we ordered, they made some suggestions and disappeared back into the kitchen. What followed was one of the best meals of my life, (Even my brother who is a Pueblo Green Chili connoisseur said it was among the best he had ever had.), homemade really makes a difference (as does two brilliantly talented chefs).
After we had completely stuffed ourselves… the ice cream arrived.
Laid out before us was a dizzying array of home made ice creams (Joie hadn’t been exaggerating). Some of the names seemed to indicate flavors that should not be made into ice cream, but my brother and I happily tried them all. All were delicious even the ones that raised eyebrows when they were announced, but the favorites from our sampling were the Ghost Raspberry (an inspired combination of raspberry ice cream with a touch of the ghost pepper (a pepper 1,000 times hotter than the jalapeño) so it tingles just a little as it melts), and the popcorn. Yes popcorn ice cream, it’s better than you can possibly imagine.
So after my brother and I were sufficiently stuffed and awed Mike and Matt came back out to chat with us. We of course sang their praises and discussed other unique flavors they were working on. Then they confirmed something that Joie had mentioned at dinner, they were planning something huge. With a stockpile of several hundred flavors already invented, they were going to not only break but also double the current worlds record for most homemade flavors of ice cream by creating over 1,000 flavors!
Not only were they going to do this, but they were going to do it on National Ice Cream Day.
Immediately the filmmaker part of my brain kicked on and I said;
“This would be an amazing documentary! We should make this a movie.”
“Okay, let’s do it!” Matt and Mike agreed
So we are.
And now you’re all caught up on the history of “Sweet Dreams”.
“What about my immortality!? You promised me immortality!” you’re probably thinking to yourself right now jumping to the premature conclusion that I’m done.
I’m not, calm down.
So, now that you’ve come this far I will give you the secret to immortality. On our IndieGoGo site you can support the film with financial donations in exchange for gifts and good karma. At the $100.00 level you will get to name one of the flavors of ice cream that will break the worlds record* and will be recorded in the Guinness Books of World Records! Voila! Instant immortality.
How friggin sweet is that!?
So now I’ve shared with you what “Sweet Dreams” is, where is came from and the secret to immortality, just as I promised I would.
So now I’m done.
Thanks for sticking it out with me.
Jeremy
